Greenfingers Community Project
Week 3
Seeds, Composting and Harvesting
Week 3 at Little Greenfingers Gardening Club was packed with hands-on gardening, learning and fantastic teamwork. We sowed over 60 sunflower seeds and are looking forward to watching them grow over the coming weeks.
Through seed sowing, the children developed patience, responsibility and an understanding of how plants grow and what they need to thrive.
The children also loved harvesting our spring onions and overwintered leeks before helping to pull weeds and some cheeky potatoes we found. We then prepared the bed ready for planting our pumpkins.
These activities encouraged teamwork, perseverance and fine motor skills, while also helping the children connect with where food comes from.
We then focused on our compost tumbler, adding spent leaves, food peelings, egg shells and cardboard to help create nutrient-rich compost for the garden.
Working together, everyone took turns rotating the tumbler to mix everything thoroughly, building cooperation and communication skills along the way. We were excited to notice flies inside the compost, which is an excellent sign that the composting process is active and progressing well.
This sparked lots of discussion about decomposition, recycling and the importance of caring for our environment and items they can bring next week to add to the compost.
